Since taking office as consul general of Peru in Miami in July, David Vergara Pilares has set forth goals to continue the improvement of consular services.
Mr. Vergara Pilares said he will continue to provide humanitarian care for legal Peruvians within his district, as well as to strengthen ties here with Peru and its culture.
The Consulate General of Peru in Miami, hand-in-hand with the Foreign Ministry, is making efforts to promote the modernization and automation of consular services, he said.
An example of this is the recent transformation towards a digital network model of services for Peruvian consular offices, which will help facilitate and guarantee the interoperability of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the different dependencies within the state and other consulates throughout the world, he said.
Mr. Vergara Pilares said he also wants to mobilize the consulate to travel throughout Florida and bring its services to the over 300,000 Peruvians living in the state. They will have access to obtaining Peruvian IDs, passports, marriage licenses, power of attorney authorization and student or business visas.
After graduating with a law degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima, Mr. Vergara Pilares has been serving Peru as a diplomat since 1996, when he first joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru, and has served in various positions throughout the US, South America and Europe.
Most recently, he was the deputy chief of missions at the Embassy of Peru in Brussels, Belgium, and worked in the political section of the directorate of South America as an advisor in a maritime dispute with Chile and the chief of the department of the United States of America and the deputy director of North America. Right before taking on the consul general role in Miami, he was in Panama as Peru’s deputy chief of missions.
“One of my main roles as a consulate is to bring more tourism from Florida to our country of Peru, which involves a targeted approach that leverages Peru’s unique attractions, culture, gastronomy, heritage and richness. We can achieve this through organized fairs and having close relationships with tourism and travel agencies,” he said. “I would like to bear in mind that, together with the consulate staff, we are at your willingness to provide Florida Peruvians with the best possible care.”
Mr. Vergara Pilares spoke with Miami Today reporter Abraham Galvan.
