SCHRAM CITY — On Sunday, August 11, a Nokomis woman was apprehended for purportedly engaging in shoplifting at a Dollar General store.
Shawna M. Pacewic, 50, of Nokomis, was taken into custody for the offenses of shoplifting, assault causing serious harm, driving with a suspended or revoked license, and failing to report a motor vehicle accident involving personal injury.
E-911 telecommunicators from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department received the call at 4:58 p.m. of a person possibly struck by a vehicle at Dollar General, located at 502 22nd Street in Schram City.
At the time, the Hillsboro Police Department was on another priority call involving a barricaded subject. Until they could have free units to respond, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department was called in for an assist.
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies learned that one of the Dollar General clerks followed a person outside the store to confront the suspect about a potential shoplifting. During the interaction, the clerk was struck by the vehicle and injured. A description of the vehicle was provided along with a possible license plate number.
While investigating the incident and attempting to identify the suspect, Hillsboro Police was called to the Sheriff’s Department to meet with a potential suspect.
Pacewic faces misdemeanor charges of retail theft of less than $300 and driving on a suspended license. She also faces felony charges of driving while her license was revoked resulting in injury, a motor vehicle crash resulting in an injury, and aggravated assault of a merchant.
Pacewic appeared in court the following day and was released with the following provisions: no contact with the Dollar General store in Schram City and not operating a motor vehicle. Her next appearance is September 9 at 10 a.m. in the Montgomery County Courthouse.
Meanwhile, employees of the store are raising money for the injured employee to help with medical costs. They are collecting funds at the store and will be holding a bake sale on Friday, August 30 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, August 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
